6th Grade
6th grade students are learning how wellness is related to their world by exploring the topics of stress, conflict resolution and peer aggression.  Growth and development is explored, as students gain a deeper understanding of how puberty, emotions and self esteem contribute to wellness. As part of the Stress Management Unit, students will learn a relaxation technique and deep breathing to reduce tension and stress.

7th Grade
7th grade students are discussing the power of influences in their lives.  Learning to see the influence of peers, parents and themselves helps the students understand they ultimately have the choice to be in charge of the decisions they make regarding wellness.  The topics of tobacco, alcohol and drug prevention are being introduced and students are learning the dangers of drugs on their wellness. Positive decision making and respectful refusal skills are practiced in class through role playing and skits.

8th Grade
8th grade students are exploring relationships, all different types but focusing the traits of healthy relationships within their lives.  Students will learn about decision making and positive choices within relationships. Students will have a guest speaker come in from the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center working on promoting healthy teen dating relationships. Strategies to learn what is best for each individual by listening to the "clues" we feel when trying to make the right choice helps students become more confident in their own intuitions.  The sensitive topics of sexuality, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and abstinence are all addressed through the course.  Respectful refusal skills are taught and practiced through small group discussion and role plays.

Health Enrichment
6th, 7th and 8th grade students take a Health Enrichment class at some point during the AMS experience.  During Health Enrichment, students  explore health related subjects in a variety of ways.  Projects, role playing, presentations and accountable talk to name a few.  Expectations for effort and conduct are the same as in the traditional Health class.  Enrichment provides students with the opportunity to explore a health topic in safe environment and become more knowledgeable of the variety of areas of wellness.

Peer Mediation
Peer Mediation is a program that helps any AMS student in conflict with another student. Conflicts are referred to my attention and I will set up Peer to Peer mediation to help resolve conflict with an agreement made by the two parties in conflict. The agreement is facilitated by trained peer mediators.
