Welcome to Ms. Cooney's LA Class
Welcome to 6th grade!
I hope that you had a fun and relaxing summer. I am really excited to get to know each of you over the next couple of weeks as we start out the new school year.
Overview of LA:
Our class will be reading a wide variety of texts this year. Students explore fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. It is my goal that all students become more confident reading for information as well as finding the joy in a well-crafted story or poem.
I am here for extra help on Monday afternoons until 3:30. If you cannot stay after on Monday but need my help, please check with me and we can work a time out.
There are two standard assignments for homework each week.
First, all students should plan to read at least twenty minutes each day outside of school. The reading should be something that is enjoyable in a genre and format that makes sense to the individual reader. So yes, students can read magazines, graphic novels, video game reviews, or history in addition to or instead of his or her independent reading book.
Grammar homework will be assigned each Wednesday and due one week later. This work is intended to reinforce concepts addressed in class and prepare students for a quiz the following Friday.
