    Class Overview

Welcome to 8th grade ELA!  The 8th grade will be an important year in preparing you for high school.  This year we will study a wide range of texts including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. Specifically, we will study: The Lord of the Flies, Growing Up Under Hitler’s Shadow, Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and “The Monkey’s Paw”.  We will learn by reading, writing, and speaking about each topic.  I am truly excited to get to know you and help you strengthen your ELA abilities.  Please know that my door is always open should you have any questions or concerns.  I am here to support you and help you learn.  Have a successful and memorable year!

    Classroom Conduct

Students are expected to be respectful—of themselves, their peers, their teacher, and their education—at all times.   This is the first step to a comfortable and effective learning environment.

The required materials for daily success in this class are:

Pen or pencil (highlighters and colored pencils are also useful)

    1-inch binder

        Loose-leaf white lined paper

You will be graded on tests, quizzes, writing assignments, projects/reports, and classwork.  Assignments will drop a letter grade for every day that they are late.  If you don’t do well on an assignment, don’t panic.  You will have many opportunities to improve your grade.  If you begin to fall behind, it is your responsibility to see me immediately so we can schedule after school extra help.  I am always available after school to assist you with any assignment.  It is imperative that you check Aspen  on a regular basis so that you know what your academic standing is.

The grades will break down in the following percentages:

Tests, writing assignments, and projects:                                 50%

Type two writing assignments and quizzes:                  30%

    Classwork, homework and binder:                     20%
