Guidance & School Counseling
-
Hello and welcome to my web page. As the Cashman Elementary School Adjustment Counselor, I am available to help you and your child have a successful school year. I work with students, parents, teachers and administrators to help children learn and develop to their highest potential.
Children do not always adjust easily to the changes that a new school year brings. Many students are also struggling with changes in their family or living situation. Others may be coping with grief or the serious illness of a family member. When a child's emotions begin to interfere with his/her learning and ability to adjust positively to school, brief services may be helpful. I provide parent and teacher consultation, individual and small group counseling, emergency services, and information and referral regarding community resources. To contribute to our positive school climate, I also assist students in developing problem solving skills and self-control by helping them process a conflict, take responsibility for their actions, apologize when necessary and identify more effective ways to manage the situation.Teaching children to recognize, report and stand up against bullying is another part of my role. I use the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit and work with each classroom in grades 1 through 4, to help students with this important issue. Learning to solve problems and manage the emotions that peer conflicts can stir up are important developmental task and take lots of practice. Learning to recognize and report bullying,, whether it is happening to you or another child, is an important part of our lessons.
