Course Description
(CP) / (H) Portfolio I
Length of course: One quarter
Grade level(s): 9, 10, 11, 12
This is a prerequisite course for all art classes, providing an introduction to the concepts of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Students will work in variety of mediums which include drawing and painting, ceramics, sculpture and photography.
Rationale
In order to create, discuss and analyze Art and how it affects the world and the way we see it, students must have a sound foundation in the fundamental components of Art. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design are the building blocks and guiding principles of Art. These essential concepts will be the focus when creating projects throughout the quarter.
Course Objectives
This course aims to review the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and to further investigate how each applies to both the Art around us and the Art we create. Students will work in a variety of mediums to display their knowledge of how to apply the elements and principles to their work.
By the completion of this course students will be able to:
-identify and understand the Elements of Art and Principles of Design
-utilize the Elements and Principles in a variety of 2D and 3D mediums
-be fundamentally and procedurally competent in 2D mediums such as drawing, painting, printmaking and photography.
-be fundamentally and procedurally competent in 3D mediums, i.e. ceramics and sculpture.
Materials
Students are required to have a sketchbook for weekly assignments and 3-ring binder. Acceptable size range is anywhere between 8” x 10” to 11” x 14”. Each student will have a portfolio provided for them for IN SCHOOL use only, students are encouraged to work at home but no form of transport will be provided.
Course Participation Requirements
Students are expected to attend all classes and be a positive and engaged member of the classroom. All excused absences are expected to made-up, either after school or during A Block. Each “cut” class (unexcused absence) will result in a 10-point reduction from quarter grade and the class cannot be made-up. Five lates will result in an unexcused absence and thus receive a 10-point deduction from their quarter grade.
Student Expectations
Students are expected to be respectful of both the studio space and others who use these same facilities. The studio space is shared by many students, therefore everyone is responsible for maintaining it. Students are responsible for their workspace/materials and the general upkeep of the studio space. Vulgar and crude language is strictly prohibited and students will be written up immediately. Any infractions of the above classroom rules may result in a student detention, a phone call to parent, or parent meeting.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is one form of cheating that will not be tolerated. Plagiarism includes downloading words of entire pages from online to include in students’ assignments without giving proper credit to those sources. Students are reminded that repeated violations of these regulations affect their grades (by receiving zeroes for assignments), their behavior record, and their reputation of character and honesty. Infractions of this rule may result in serious disciplinary actions despite the fact that it may be the first offense. (AHS Student Handbook 2016- 2017)
Grading
Projects and assignments are expected to be handed in on-time, late projects and assignments will incur a 10-point deduction.
WORK WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF THE DUE DATE
Projects 50%
Conduct and Effort 50%
Cell Phone Policy
