Summer Reading 2025
Grade 9: Concrete Rose
by Angie Thomas*
A limited number of copies are available for students to sign out in Mrs. Daileanes’ room (118) or Ms. McGonagle’s room (116).
*Concrete Rose is a prequel to the Grade 9 novel The Hate U Give, adding relevant background information and important character development for a deeper understanding of The Hate U Give. Concrete Rose contains mature content (age 14+) related to the socioeconomic and racial conditions of the story's setting: drug use, gang activity, gun violence, and swearing. This content is present in the context of developing the novel's themes of responsibility, maturity, grief, poverty, and systemic injustice.
Grade 10: The Other Wes Moore
by Wes Moore
A limited number of copies are available for students to sign out in Mrs. Little’s room (110) and Ms. Rivers’ room (226).
Grade 11: The Things They Carried
by Tim O’Brien
A limited number of copies are available for students to sign out in Mr. Bastien’s room (232).
Grade 12: The Power of One
by Bryce Courtenay
A limited number of copies are available for students to sign out in the AHS library.
A limited number of texts will also be available at the Amesbury Public Library and/or through interlibrary loan requests.
Honors and AP students are required to read and will be assessed. College Prep (CP) students are encouraged to read, but it is not mandatory. Extra credit will be available to CP students who read and take the assessment. Testing will take place in early September. The testing date is TBD, but will be within the first two weeks of school.
If a CP student reads and wants to take the test for extra credit, they need to see:
Grade 9: Mrs. Daileanes
Grade 10: Mrs. Little
Grade 11: Mr. Bastien
Grade 12: Mrs. Brockmyre
Any questions or concerns about summer reading can be directed to English Department Head, Mr. Bastien (steven.bastien@amesburyma.org).
