    Course Description

    (CP) / (H) FILM PHOTOGRAPHY I

    Length of course: One quarter

    Grade level(s): 9, 10, 11, 12

This is a traditional black and white film photography course. The class introduces the students to the history of photography, standard workings of cameras, concepts of exposing and developing B&W film, darkroom equipment and safety, B&W printmaking, and final presentation. Students may use their own film cameras.

    Rationale

To comprehend and interpret the images we see in our world students must first understand how photographic images are composed, processed and presented. Film photography provides the fundamental knowledge of how photographic images evoke emotional responses by utilizing the basic functions of a film camera, understanding techniques and skills, and incorporating the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.

    Course Objectives

This course is intended to introduce students to operations of the film camera and  negative/positive film processing, printing and presenting. We will study the history of the camera, it’s basic functions and how to expose, process, develop film, print and present B&W photographs. Students will understand composition and incorporate prior knowledge of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design when creating images.

By the completion of this course students will be able to:

-Understand how a camera functions and captures images.

-Expose, process and develop B&W film.

-Enlarge film negatives and process B&W photographic prints.

-Manipulate the shutter speed and aperture to produce specific images.

-Create B&W photographic images that display fundamental knowledge of composition and the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.

    Materials

Students who have their own 35mm film camera may use it if it is appropriate for the course. Film cameras will be provided and must be returned in the same condition in which they are received.

    Course Participation Requirements

Students are expected to attend all classes and be a positive and engaged member of the classroom.  All excused absences are expected to made-up, either after school or during A Block. Each “cut” class (unexcused absence) will result in a 10-point reduction from quarter grade and the class cannot be made-up. Five lates will result in an unexcused absence and thus receive a 10-point deduction from their quarter grade.

    Student Expectations

Students are expected to be respectful of both the studio space/darkroom and others using these same facilities. The studio space is shared by many students, therefore everyone is responsible for maintaining it. Students are responsible for both their workspace/materials and the general upkeep of the darkroom and studio space. Any infractions of the above classroom rules may result in a detention, a phone call to parent, or parent meeting.

    Plagiarism

Plagiarism is one form of cheating that will not be tolerated. Plagiarism includes downloading words of entire pages from online to include in students’ assignments without giving proper credit to those sources.  Students are reminded that repeated violations of these regulations affect their grades (by receiving zeroes for assignments), their behavior record, and their reputation of character and honesty. Infractions of this rule may result in serious disciplinary actions despite the fact that it may be the first offense.

    Grading

Projects and assignments are expected to be handed in on-time, late projects and  assignments may not be accepted or will incur a 10-point deduction for each week it is late.

WORK WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF THE DUE DATE

    Projects 50%

    Conduct and Effort 50%

    Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones use is NOT permitted in the classroom at any time. There is a cell phone shoe holder that students will be required to use. If at any point during class time a cell phone is not in its designated space the student will lose 20 points in their conduct and grade for that week.
